본 드라마는 푸줏간 주인의 딸 번장옥과 곤경에 빠진 후작 사정이 눈보라 속에서 운명적으로 만나는 이야기를 다룬다.  
부모를 잃고 가장이 되려는 여인과 신분을 감추고 17년 전의 피 맺힌 원한을 갚으려는 사내, 두 사람은 각자의 목적을 위해 위장 혼인을 하지만 그 과정에서 진정한 사랑이 싹튼다. 
서로를 이용하려던 관계는 어느새 사랑으로 변했으나, 그 사랑은 피비린내 나는 전쟁을 불러와 사랑하는 이들은 헤어질 수밖에 없었다. 
번장옥은 가족과 남편, 그리고 정의를 찾기 위해 돼지 잡던 칼을 들고 전장으로 향하고, 신분을 되찾은 철혈후 사정은 나라와 사랑, 그리고 진실을 수호하고자 한다. 
마침내 전장에서 재회한 두 사람은 목숨 걸고 적을 무찌른다. 권력 앞에 굴하지 않고 진실을 밝히며 고향으로 돌아와 초심을 지킨다.
